Tournaments

London Golf Club first opened in July 1994 and did so in spectacular fashion on the Heritage course. Designer Jack Nicklaus went up against fellow Major winners Seve Ballesteros and Tony Jacklin in a Charity Challenge Skins Match. The mercurial Spaniard emerged victorious thanks to his short game.

Both the Heritage and the sister course, the International, have gone on to host several professional events. The former hosted the 2008 and 2009 European Open which were won by Englishman Ross Fisher, and Frenchman Christian Cévaër.

The International hosted the 2014 Volvo World Matchplay Championship won by Mikko Ilonen over Henrik Stenson. It also welcomed competitors for the 2018 and 2019 Staysure PGA Seniors Championship, which were won by Englishman Philip Golding and Welshman Phillip Price.

Tournament golf is important in testing your course against the best players in the game, and we are delighted that both of our Jack Nicklaus courses have been tested under these conditions and will continue to be tested in the future. Learn more about the tournaments hosted over the Heritage and International below, and check back regularly as we strive to bring more tournament golf to London Golf Club.

European Open

2008

Ross Fisher looked back on a “great week” after overcoming adverse weather and a world class field to win The European Open in emphatic style at London Golf Club. The 27 year old Englishman, who began the tournament with a course-record 63, completed a majestic seven stroke win by holing a bunker shot on the last. That summed up the week, one that began with him qualifying for The Open Championship and contemplating pulling out of this event because of tiredness.

Sergio Garcia thought a closing 68 might give him a chance given the conditions. He then produced a 66 he called one of the top-five rounds of his career and “definitely the best putting round I’ve ever had”. Yet, he would have had to shoot an unprecedented 59 just for a play-off.

Fisher, three ahead of closest challenger Graeme McDowell and nine clear of Garcia overnight, finished with a 68 for a 20 under par total – and with it moved from 21st in The Ryder Cup standings to 11th. “Just a great week,” he said. “I felt really calm all day, very composed, comfy with my game. “I got my fair share of luck as well – at the last I was just thinking, ‘Try and put it on the green’. I’m delighted.”

The win was Fisher’s second on The European Tour and having done it in such style against some of The European Tour’s biggest names, the future can only look bright for the Englishman attached to Wentworth Club. Fisher said: “They say the second win is harder. I might have made it look easy, but it certainly wasn’t.” As for the possibility of a Ryder Cup debut, he added: “I’d love it, but it’s still a long way off.”

Staysure PGA Seniors Championship

2018

Philip Golding won the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship as he equalled the course-record with a nine under par round of 63 at London Golf Club.

The Englishman came from six shots behind with a stunning final day charge to card an 18 under par total of 270 to claim his first 2018 Staysure Tour title, and his third victory on the over-50’s circuit in 12 months at the European Tour Destination.

Golding started his surge with four birdies in his first five holes, before he gained another shot on the seventh hole to make the turn in 31 strokes, five under par. The 2017 Travis Perkins Masters winner began the day five groups ahead of the overnight leaders Santiago Luna and Greg Turner, and after the turn he continued to apply the pressure as the duo faltered in the heat.

A further four birdies saw Golding join Luna at the top of the leaderboard, before the Spaniard made three bogeys in four holes on his back nine to leave the Englishman two shots clear.

Even with a dropped shot on the 16th Golding remained in control and gave himself the chance for victory as he birdied the last after his 20 foot eagle putt failed to drop for a new course-record.

Volvo World Match Play Championship

The London Golf Club hosted the Volvo World Match Play in 2014. In its 50th anniversary this iconic Championship returned to its London roots, as well as its original format. The event took place on the International course.

Following an exciting final, Ilonen emerged as champion. Referring to all the previous famous winners, he said, “I think they are going to look at it and say, what is Mikko Ilonen doing there?! It’s amazing!! It’s going to take a little while to sink in. This is the perfect venue and everything worked great this week.”

Since halving his opening match on Wednesday, Stenson has won all of his matches, as has Ilonen since losing to Joost Luiten on the same day. After the tension of their semi-final victories and a short lunch break, fitness and stamina were likely to play their part in the afternoon.

Having been forced to lay up on the 1st after wayward drives, both players only just cleared the water with inches to spare before halving it, and the next two holes, in par. The Swede was first to draw blood with a two at the short 4th, but handed his lead straight back by dropping a shot at the next. Ilonen then sank a good putt for a two at the 8th after his opponent had hit into the water, which meant that he was 1-up at the turn. Halves in three at the 10th were followed by another birdie at the next to put Ilonen 2-up, and he extended his lead to three at the 12th after a par save from sand.
